GoPro HERO4/HERO5/HERO6 remote camera controls on Polar V800

Edit February 8th, 2018: GoPro has discontinued their Developer Program, which provided software development kits (SDKs) to Polar to build connectivity to GoPro cameras. While the connectivity works for the time being, unfortunately we cannot guarantee that it will keep working in the future. You can keep making use of our GoPro features for as long as they work satisfactorily. The V800 works with the GoPro camera models and software versions listed in this document, however, support for future models and versions cannot be guaranteed.

The GoPro remote camera controls on V800 allow you to capture pictures, start and stop video recording, and tag HiLights in video mode. You’ll also see your camera’s battery status and remaining storage. The controls can be used during training sessions as well as outside of training. At this time V800 is compatible with GoPro HERO4 Black, GoPro HERO4 Silver, GoPro HERO5 Black, GoPro HERO5 Session and GoPro HERO6 Black.

Before getting started check that all of the following requirements are met:

Polar V800 firmware: You need to have version 1.11.49 or newer. Download the latest firmware onto V800 via FlowSync by connecting it to your computer with the cable.

GoPro HERO4 Black and Silver software: check that your camera has software version 05.00 or newer.

GoPro HERO5 Black software: check that your camera has software version 02.60 or newer.

GoPro HERO5 Session software: check that your camera has software version 02.51 or newer.

GoPro HERO6 Black software: check that your camera has software version 01.51 or newer.

The version number is shown on your camera display after switching it on. If you need to update, there are three ways to perform the update: via Quik software on your PC, via the Capture on your phone or manually via the microSD card on your PC.

Use

How to use GoPro remote camera controls on V800

The remote camera controls can be used in two ways: during training and outside of training sessions. In both cases the functionality is the same: you can capture pictures, start and stop video recording, and tag HiLights during video recording. You’ll also see your camera’s battery status, remaining storage, picture and video resolution, video field of view (FOV) and frames per second (fps).

Functions

Change camera mode: Press and hold START.

In Photo mode: Press START to capture a photo.

In Video mode: Press START to start video recording. Press START again to stop recording. Tap your V800 to tag a HiLight.

In Multi-shot mode: Press START to capture multi-shot photos.

Your V800 and GoPro should be within 10 meter range of each other when using the remote control functions.

Use Outside of Training

  1. On V800, choose GoPro from the menu, and press START.
  2. Searching for GoPro is displayed, wait until GoPro found is shown.
  3. Choose the mode you want to use from the camera. The same mode is shown on your V800.

Use During Training Session

When using GoPro in a training session all other Bluetooth devices are disabled. However, heart rate is available through GymLink transmission when using a H7 heart rate sensor.

To be able to tag a HiLight, tap must be set on in the sport profile used.  On V800, go to Settings > Sport Profiles and choose the profile you wish to edit, and set the sport specific tap sensitivity to light, normal, strong or very strong tap.

Start a training session with GoPro

  1. Go to pre-training mode on your V800.
  2. Wait until Use GoPro in this session? is displayed. Choose Yes.
  3. Choose the sport profile you wish to use, and press START.

Scroll UP or DOWN to find it the GoPro training view. Depending on your camera’s mode this view allows you to capture pictures or start video recording and tag HiLights.

If the connection to the camera is lost during a session, bring the camera close to your V800 and wait for a while for automatic reconnection. If the connection is not automatically re-established, press BACK to pause the session, and then press and hold LIGHT to access the quick menu. Choose Search GoPro. GoPro found is displayed when the connection is back on.
