How does Polar A300 track calories?

Polar A300 displays your total caloric consumption, which includes both basic metabolism and activity based calories. If you train with a compatible heart rate sensor, Polar A300 uses the activity based calories at resting, sedentary and low intensities, and the heart rate based calories at moderate and high intensities. Your physical details filled in the Polar Flow web service are used to make the calories tracking accurate to you.

I just started using my Polar A300. How can it already show my calories?

The daily activity calories that Polar A300 shows take into account your basic metabolism and the physical settings you filled in in the Polar Flow web service. Every bodily function takes effort, so your body burns calories even if you haven't accumulated any activity during the day. The displayed amount of calories has been calculated for the day you started using Polar A300. The activity tracking resets at 0:00/midnight.
