Pool Swimming

Swimming metrics help you analyze each swimming session, and follow your performance and progress in the long run. When using the Swimming or Pool swimming profile, V800 records your swim distance, time and pace, strokes, and also identifies your swimming style. In addition, with the help of the SWOLF score you can keep track of your development.

The Pool swimming and Swimming profiles have the exact same functionalities (from firmware version 1.5 onwards).

  • Distance and pace measurements are based on pool length (recognition of turns).
  • GPS is not available in the Swimming or Pool swimming profile.
  • Swimming metrics work best with adult swimmers whose technique is on a sufficient level.
  • Optimized for freestyle swimming.
  • Swimming drills are not supported.

Settings

Which hand do you wear V800 on?

To get the most accurate swimming metrics, it is crucial that you have set which hand you wear V800 on. If this is set incorrectly the data gathered from your swim will be flawed. Set it in V800 General Settings or in the Flow web service from Products > V800 Settings.

Pool Length

It’s important that you choose the correct pool length, as it affects pace, distance and stroke calculation, as well as your SWOLF score. The default lengths are 25 meters, 50 meters and 25 yards, but you can also set it manually to a custom length.  The minimum length that can be chosen is 20 meters/yards.

The chosen pool length is shown in pre-training mode. To change it from there, press and hold LIGHT to access the Quick menu, choose Pool length and set the correct length.  It can also be changed from the main menu in Settings > Sport Profiles > Pool swimming/Swimming > Pool length.

How to see rest time on the display in pool swimming

Rest time can be added to the pool swimming training view from sport profiles in the Flow web service. During a swimming session rest time starts running when you stop, and allows you to easily see the time spent resting between laps.

To add rest time to the training view, do the following:

  1. Login to Flow, and click your name in the upper right corner.
  2. Choose Sport Profiles, click EDIT on the pool swimming profile.
  3. Under Related to device, click Training Views.
  4. Click a training view to edit it, or click ADD NEW VIEW
  5. Choose the Time category, and click Rest time
  6. Click SAVE, and sync the profile to your V800 via Flow.

 

What is recorded from your swim?

When using the Swimming or Pool swimming profile V800 records your swim distance, time and pace, and counts strokes. In addition, it identifies your swimming style and gives you a SWOLF score. You’ll also get heart rate information if you wear a H7 or H10 heart rate sensor.

If you swim in salt water or highly chlorinated water, or have repeated challenges measuring heart rate when swimming, consider using the Polar T31C heart rate sensor.

Pace and Distance

The pace and distance measurements are based on pool length, therefore to get accurate data always make sure you have set the correct pool length. V800 recognizes when you turn, and uses this information to give you accurate pace and distance.

Strokes

V800 tells you how many strokes you take per minute (stroke rate), and also how many strokes you take per pool length. This information can be used to find out more about your swimming technique, rhythm and timing.

If your stroke rate is too low, you might be moving your arms too slowly. If your stoke rate is too high, your stroke might be too short for optimal performance. Whichever the case, knowing your stroke rate will help perfect your technique.

Swimming Styles

When using the Swimming or Pool swimming profile V800 recognizes your swimming style, and calculates style specific metrics as well as totals for your whole session. 

Styles V800 recognizes:

  • Freestyle
  • Backstroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Butterfly

Swimming style identification works best with freestyle. Different swimmers may have subtleties in their technique that can lead to V800 not recognizing their swimming style. External factors can also affect swimming style identification. If you have to dodge other swimmers or if your swimming is interrupted by something, you may experience interruptions or gaps in the calculation. Please note that swimming metrics are not calculated for the period that the swimming style is not recognized.

SWOLF – What is it?

SWOLF – short for swimming and golf – is an indirect measure of efficiency. SWOLF is calculated by adding together your time and the amount of strokes it takes you to swim a pool length. For instance, 30 seconds and 10 strokes to swim the length of a pool will equal a SWOLF score of 40. Generally, the lower your SWOLF is for a certain distance and style, the more efficient you are. SWOLF is highly individual, and thus should not be compared to SWOLF scores other people have swum. It’s rather a personal tool that can help you improve and fine-tune your technique, and find an optimal efficiency for different styles.

Calorie calculation during swimming

Swimming burns a relatively high amount of calories in a short amount of time. The most accurate way to measure calories during swimming is to wear a heart rate sensor. Always remember to use the swimming or pool swimming sport profile to make sure the calorie calculation is as accurate as possible. If you do not wear a heart rate sensor while swimming, calorie consumption is based on information of your wrist movements from the accelerometer.  However, calorie consumption data gathered from your wrist movements under water with an accelerometer is not as accurate as calorie consumption data from your heart rate.
