Troubleshooting Polar H9 / H10 heart rate sensor

If your Polar H9 / Polar H10 heart rate sensor is not working as it should, try troubleshooting before contacting your closest Polar Service

Is the heart rate sensor strap and connector clean?

Follow the care instructions to ensure reliable measurement and to maximize the life span of the heart rate sensor.

Check from the receiving device's manual that it supports Bluetooth 4.0 (Bluetooth Smart) and its standardized heart rate service

Polar H9 and H10 are not compatible with earlier Bluetooth versions.

Do you have a compatible receiving device or application in use?

Check out the compatibility requirements.

Check that you have paired the heart rate sensor with the application

If paring does not work, check that bluetooth on the receiving device is enabled.

When pairing, make sure you are far (10 m/ 33 ft) from other Bluetooth Smart heart rate sensor users.

If your receiving device has a bluetooth devices list, you can check if the sensor is paired. Polar H9 / H10 along with its ID number is listed when the sensor is paired. The ID number is printed on the back of the sensor.

Check that you are wearing the heart rate sensor correctly

Could the heart rate sensor battery be getting empty?

Have you tried if changing the battery helps. See instructions video for  H9 or H10.

  • Battery lifetime of Polar H9 is about 400 hours.
  • Battery lifetime of Polar H10 is about 400 hours.

Is the receiving device positioned correctly?

Keep the receiving device in front of you to ensure sufficient transmission range. A good place e.g. for a mobile phone is in a front pocket or handlebar.

2.4 GHz radio frequency signal, which Bluetooth Smart uses, does not pass through human body, e.g. your arm.

Have you tried restarting the application and heart rate sensor?

Exit the application and remove the heart rate sensor from the strap. Wait 30 seconds, place the sensor back and start the application.

Try if resetting the device to factory settings would help (H9/H10)

To reset your heart rate sensor:

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Press the metal snaps that attach to the strap with your fingers for at least 10 seconds.
  3. Wait 30 seconds and then put the battery back in.

After the reset you need to pair the sensor with your devices again.

If your receiving device has a bluetooth devices list, try if removing the Polar H9 / H10 from the list and pairing it again helps

Remember to wear the heart rate sensor when pairing.

Try restarting the receiving device to see if it would help

If possible, try if the heart rate sensor works with some other compatible application or with some other compatible device.

My sensor is not working. What do I do?

A sensor can be in three different modes with Polar Beat. Check that the sensor you wish to use is paired with Polar Beat.

  • Not paired. To use the sensor, you need to pair it with Polar Beat.
  • Not active. The sensor has been paired with Polar Beat, but it is not currently active.
  • Paired. The sensor is paired with Polar Beat and is currently active.

Abnormal heart rate readings during exercise

Static electricity, technical sportswear and special conditions

If air humidity is low or you are exercising in windy conditions (for example high-speed road racing), a fluttering shirt may rub the heart rate sensor and generate static electricity. This causes additional signals, especially if the contact between skin and heart rate sensor is poor. To avoid this:

  • Moisten the electrodes before use or, if your strap has plastic electrodes, you can use conductive lotion or gel.
  • Use a cotton shirt instead of a synthetic shirt.
  • Use a tighter shirt to avoid fluttering of the material.
  • Use the heart rate sensor on a wet shirt.
  • Try placing the heart rate sensor slightly to the left.
Arrhythmia

Polar products are not designed to detect arrhythmia or irregular rhythms and will interpret them as noise or interference. In most cases the Polar training computers work fine for persons with cardiac arrhythmia, but in some cases (many abnormal heart beat intervals) arrhythmia may cause incorrect heart rate readings.
